Zoo for endangered species

The Twycross Zoo in Atherstone, England, is one of the most remarkable zoological institutions in the UK and enjoys an international reputation as a center for primate conservation and research. Founded in 1963 by the two women Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans, who are considered the first female zoo directors in the UK, the zoo has grown from humble beginnings to become a significant attraction that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. It covers an area of approximately 40 hectares and provides habitat for over 500 animals from more than 100 species, with a focus on primates, earning it the nickname "World Primate Centre."

Family day out at zoo

A unique feature of Twycross Zoo is that it is the only zoo in the UK that houses all four species of great apes: gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and bonobos. Particularly the bonobos, a rare and endangered species of ape, are a highlight, as Twycross is the only place in the UK where these animals can be seen. The zoo plays a key role in breeding programs for endangered species, and it is not uncommon for visitors to observe young animals such as bonobo babies or playful orangutan offspring. These conservation efforts highlight the zoo's mission, which goes far beyond mere entertainment.

Primates at Twycross Zoo

The facility is divided into various themed areas that provide the animals with naturalistic habitats while allowing visitors to have an immersive experience. One of the most striking areas is "Chimpanzee Eden," an award-winning habitat that gives chimpanzees ample space to climb, play, and explore. Another highlight is the "Borneo Longhouse," a tropical enclosure that houses a variety of exotic birds and small animals in a lush, aquatic garden landscape. Visitors can also stroll through a walk-through lemur area where ring-tailed lemurs roam freely, or observe the impressive Sumatran tigers up close through a tunnel. The Himalaya Zone with snow leopards and the "Uda Walawe" area with Asian elephants also offer spectacular insights into the animal kingdom.

Interactive attractions for kids

In addition to primates and big cats, Twycross Zoo offers a wide range of other animal species, including giraffes, rhinos, zebras, penguins, and an impressive collection of birds and reptiles. The zoo places great emphasis on presenting the animals in modern, species-appropriate enclosures, with many areas being renovated or redesigned in recent years. A nature reserve within the grounds also allows visitors to observe native British wildlife in its natural environment, adding an extra dimension to the experience.

Biodiversity at Twycross Zoo

For families, Twycross Zoo is particularly attractive with "The Gruffalo Discovery Land," a four-hectare area based on the popular children's book series "The Gruffalo." Here, visitors encounter life-sized figures of the characters - such as the mouse, the fox, the owl, the snake, and the Gruffalo himself - and can explore interactive stations that link real animals like snakes or owls with the story. This area was specifically designed for younger children and offers a playful way to connect nature and imagination. In addition, there are outdoor playgrounds, a "Wet & Wild" water area, and an indoor soft play area, making the zoo an ideal destination for a family outing.

Twycross Zoo is not just a tourist attraction, but also an internationally recognized charity dedicated to research and the protection of endangered species. Revenues go directly towards breeding programs and global projects aimed at securing the survival of vulnerable animals. Visitors actively contribute to the zoo's mission, giving the experience a deeper meaning. Regular talks and feedings by staff also provide the opportunity to learn more about the animals and their threats.

The dining facilities at the zoo are diverse, ranging from restaurants overlooking the enclosures, such as the "Himalaya Centre," to smaller kiosks offering snacks like fish and chips or ice cream. The offerings include freshly prepared meals as well as vegetarian options, catering to all tastes. Seasonal events such as Halloween specials or Christmas programs with a Gruffalo theme ensure that the zoo remains a lively place throughout the year.

Great place to take the kids, and small enough for little ones to walk around. Can get very busy though.

Seen more animals in my front garden. They say that they're likely in their indoor area so out of sight but you can tell by the derelict enclosures the animals just aren't there. You'll pay ££££ to see a few monkeys and a giraffe. If you're charging top dollar then you need to get more animals and focus on doing more to keep the ones you do have in sight. Won't be going again or recommending to family and friends. Absolute scam

Pay once and unlimited returns for free... I mean you can't go wrong with that! Love twycross zoo. Even though the carpark was busy the last time we went, there was no queue to get in, the electronic ticketing system is smooth as. Cannot complain at all!

It's an excellent zoo. Ample parking. Loads of different and incredible animals. The Gruffalo trail was phenomenal; we could have spent the entire day in that section

A great zoo with friendly, helpful staff. The food at the catch of the day restaurant was good as well. It's a good place to spend a few hours babysitting the grandchild! I bought the year pass, so we will definitely be back.
